Let us face facts: Burroughs wrote some darn good slam-bang adventure stories, with actual ethical values expressed as Good Things.
The hero saves folks from Bad Situations, saves pretty ladies from Fates Worse Than Death, has adventures that make Indiana Jones look like a stay-at-home, and generally has a good time doing it. And he Gets The Girl in the end.

After the bug has bit ..... introduce them to Robert Heinlein. You won't be sorry.
Are they old-fashioned? You betcha. But it's a value-system that works, and works well.
