The Berlin-made Merten 40 mm / 70 mm plastic figures that I bought in Germany in the mid-1950s were some of the most interesting I have ever seen. They ranged from Landsknechts to High Middle Ages and included ladies and children, something that the American sets of knights seldom did.
The armor and clothing actually looked like the old paintings we saw in museums, not like Hollywood fantasy.
They also made a line of Arabs that I took quite a fancy to.
