In the mid-1950s, my father was transferred to Augsburg, Germany with the US Army. I was at an age when I was fascinated by the idea of the medieval knights ..... Robin Hood, King Arthur and all that wonderful stuff. We lived at Gerhart Hauptmann Straße 22 in Göggingen bei Augsburg.
We got there just in time for the last of the 70mm Elastolin composition medievals ( figures made from a glue and sawdust mixture known as "masse" molded on a wire armature ) and the first of the famed 70mm Elastolin plastic figures.
I bought several of each out of my allowance, from a lovely little toy store in Augsburg, along with several of the pre-War Lineol knights in a local antique store, and have remained a fan of the genre ever since. They occupy pride-of-place in my collection of toy solders, and will always symbolize "toy soldiers" and Christmas in my memories.
I am always interested in buying examples of these, both Elastolin and Lineol, pre-war and post-war, but I need to make it clear that I am NOT interested in the modern military figures ( WW I, Weimar or WW II ) made by these companies, nor in the plastic medievals. I have no interest in Nazi period military miniatures, and I have most of the Elastolin medieval plastics already, though I would be interested in these figures in 70 mm. ( I do not collect the 40 mm size )
I have gotten a lot of e-mail asking "Where can I get Elastolin plastic medievals?" These are being remade by Preiser, and can be found thru the links at the bottom of this page, including weapons packs. The 40 mm are sometimes found on E-Bay Auction.
Not all composition ( masse ) figures are Elastolin / Lineols, though the Elastolin name is used as a generic designation. The mounted knight on the left is made by Antono, and the foot knights in the middle are made by Pratas.
The crusaders on the right are Italian made. Durso made some nice figures too.
