DUTIES ON THE FIRING LINE: US ARMY

  • 1. I will always go to the right of my front rank man when the squad forms skirmishers.
  • 2. I will take the distance as a skirmisher named by my squad leader
  • 3. I will find my duties in Par. 6, 42, 104, 133, 134, 138, 139, 149, 152, 3, 4, 5, and 6, 203, 209, 233, 247, 251, 254, 255, 319, 354, 367, (I. D. R.) 209 (S. A. F. M.)
  • 4. I must find my target quickly from what my squad leader tells me.
  • 5. I must be able to tell any one else the kind and place of my target.
  • 6. I must use my rear sight in finding or showing my target.
  • 7. I must be able to use the horizontal or vertical clock system id finding or showing my targets.
  • 8. I must be able to set my sights quickly and right as ordered.
  • 9. I must bring my rifle to my shoulder when firing.
  • 10. I must aim carefully and reload quickly.
  • 11. I must not fire faster than I am ordered to fire.
  • 12. I must fire at the target I am told to fire at until ordered to change by my squad leader.
  • 13. I must not fire at plain targets if I might slight dim ones.
  • 14. I must always watch to the front.
  • 15. I must use the ground to gain cover in advancing and firing.
  • 16. I must select the place to stop when I next move up.
  • 17. I must keep off the top of mounds on account of the enemy seeing me.
  • 18. I must know how to fire from behind mounds, trees, piles of dirt, rocks, from doorways and windows.
  • 19. I must obey at once all orders to suspend or cease firing
  • 20. I must pay no attention to whistle signals except cease firing.
  • 21. I must obey all orders from my squad leader at once.
  • 22. I must go into the nearest place when I come up to help the firing line and take orders from the nearest squad leader.
  • 23. I must tell the man who comes up on my left the to help the firing line at once, what I am firing at, the range, and everything I was told, but I must not fire any slower to do so.
  • 24. I must ask the man on my right when I come up to help the firing line the range and target.
  • 25. I must try very hard to hit the target on every shot.
  • 26. I must obey the squad leaders orders about fixing bayonets and setting sights, for I know he does not want the firing to slow down while I am doing so.
  • 27. I must not slow up firing when I getting ready to rush forward.
  • 28. I must jump forward at the command "Rush" or "Follow me" and must not get up before I do so.
  • 29. I must not bunch up when rushing.
  • 30. I must not go to the right or to the left when going forward for that would be bunching and I would keep someone else from firing if I do so.
  • 31. I must drop down quickly at the end of rush and then crawl up on the line if I am not already on it.
  • 32. I must stay with my own squad and company but if I Lose them I will go with the one nearest to me.
  • 33. I must keep quiet except when necessary for me to speak or yell.
  • 34. I must not get excited so I will always know what I am doing.
  • 35. I must be very careful not to waste a single shot.
  • 36. I must keep 30 rounds in the first three pockets on the right of my belt and fire them only upon order.
  • 37. I must stay on the firing line if I have brought any ammunition to it.
  • 38. I must take any ammunition from the man on my right or left that is killed or wounded so badly they cannot fire.
  • 39. I must not stop firing to care for the dead or wounded.
  • 40. I must believe that I can use my bayonet better than any of the enemy.
  • 41. I must attack the enemy with my bayonet with all my strength and skill.
  • 42. I must keep in the line when charging.
  • 43. I must remember that the charge should be slow and steady and I must not run ahead of either man on my right or left.
  • 44. I must get with my squad as soon as the charge is over and fire at any of the enemy I see but must not follow them unless ordered to do so.
  • 45. I must never turn my back to the enemy. If I cannot go towards him, I will dig in place and stay until dark, or I am ordered to move back.
  • 46. I must be able to count objects or men at a distance.
  • 47. I must be able to see and know service targets when I do see them.
  • 48. I must never fire until I know what my target is and what part I am to fire at, and have first set my sight at the range given.
