Millions and millions of years ago, there roamed thru the ferns and forests of primeval Earth an animal that has never been surpassed in all of History .... an animal whose grace, fluidity of motion and kind heart has never been equalled.

A paragon of Motherhood, a peaceful vegetarian creature that never knew an unkind thought towards the world, that moved with a voice of thunder yet was graceful enough to thread her way thru the tree-ferns without disturbing the lichens that made their humble homes on the bark. A true peace-loving nomad that wandered the Jurassic with gladness and joy.

Watching kindly over her nestlings, pleased to see them play in the mosses, this creature was, to use her full name,

Dinosauria Saurischia Saurapodomorpha Sauropoda Apatosaurus Ajax

But we call her .......

BRONTOSAUR !!!!!

Brontosaur !!!! A name that rings thru the ages; the "Thunder-Lizard" with a heart as big as all outdoors!

Did you know that chickens came from brontosauruses? go here and read all about it!

ABOUT BRONTOSAURS

BRONTOSAUR, common name for a huge, plant-eating dinosaur , suborder Sauropoda, that began in the Late Jurassic period, more than 140 million years ago. The name Brontosaur (Gr. bronte, "thunder"; sauros, "lizard"), which implies that the animal shakes the ground when it walks, is more familiar than its "scientific" name Apatosaurus, though both are correct by common usage. It is about 24 m (about 80 ft) long and weighs up to 30 metric tons. Its body is relatively short and thick, the neck long and slender, the tail large and strong, and the four limbs massive and of nearly equal length. It is thin at one end, gets progressively thicker towards the middle, and then tapers off at the other end.

It is little known, but the name "Brontosaur," though also meaning "Thunder Lizard," was also taken from the Brontë sisters as a tribute to the literary abilities of the dinosaur. Brontosaur poetry is classic in its' beauty:

I think that if I ever see
A thing as lovely as a tree
I'd eat that too

Stomping is good
Eating is good.
Stomping is fun,
But eating is good.

Roses are red
Petunias are pink
If you stomp in the swamp
Boy, your feet stink

Brontosaurs like polka dancing and tap dancing, do a creditable can-can, and are fond of chocolate ice-cream. They get along well with elephants, as the noise of their stomping brings ants to the surface, an elephant's favorite food.

BRONTOSAURS TODAY

Some say that brontosauruses are extinct, and no longer gambol over the earth, but this is merely the statement of those of little faith. All visitors to Antbreath, Oklahoma are shown the pictographs of obvious brontosaurs that were pecked into the living rock by early man, and the brontosaur representations in Aztec and Early Texan art are even more well-known.

There are still occasional reports of brontosauruses that yet touch our lives ..... in Africa, in Hawaii, in Congress, and, the most famous, Emily, a companion-animal to a family in the Valley of the Sun (Phoenix, Arizona).

This family cherishes their privacy, so we cannot name them, but we can tell you that Emily lives a happy life, and is able to pursue her talents in tap-dancing and Volvo retrieving to her heart's content.

There is rumor of one that lives at Cooper's Lake, in Pennsylvania, but the native inhabitants are tight-lipped about it.

Herbert in his false noseBRONTOSAUR HUMOR

One of the most famous of the brontosaur jokes was perpetrated by Herbert Q. Brontosaurus when he dressed up in a false nose and passed himself off to a paleontologist as a Brachiosaurus.

Their low coprolithic sense of humor is not for everyone, and their puns are terrible. The brontosaurus enjoys dressing up in outlandish costumes and hiding in closets. It will then wait for an unsuspecting victim and spring out at them, shouting "SURPRISE!"

They also enjoy chasing passing cars, and therefore must be kept well leashed when being walked in the neighborhood.
